EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

Camp Information

Hoofbeat Ridge Camp offers both Day and Resident Camps, is accredited by the American Camping Association and has been family owned and operated camp since 1962. We are located about 25 miles west of Madison (off Hwy. 14).

Day Camp

Day Camp runs Monday thru Friday. Approximately 60 campers, ages 7-12, are divided into age groups of about 10 campers per group. We have several daily bus pick-up locations in and around the Madison area. Each week has a theme (i.e. Pioneer, Wild West, Horse Lover’s, Native American or Mystery Week). Group and Activity Leaders participate in the planning and organization of the weekly schedule. Daily activities include Sports (soccer, volleyball, kickball, archery, group games, etc.) Nature, Arts and Crafts, Drama, Horseback Riding and Horse Care.

Day Camp Group Leaders are assigned to a group for the entire week. They are responsible for moving the group from activity to activity, care and safety of the campers, group interaction and assisting with various activities. During staff training, all program areas are covered so group leaders will be able to help out wherever needed.

Day Camp Activity Leaders are responsible for planning and organizing activities, safety of the campers and clean up and care of equipment and supplies. They are also responsible for reporting any shortage or equipment problems to the Day Camp Director. Session 6 has a Thursday overnight for the older campers. Staff are required to work one overnight.

Resident Camp Counselor

Approximately 65 campers, ages 7-16, participate in the Resident Camp program. Camp runs from mid-June through mid-August. Campers and staff stay in bunkhouses in groups of about 10. Bunkhouses are completely winterized and have bathroom and shower facilities in the building.

Staff as cabin counselors are responsible for a group of 7-10 campers. For morning skill classes, staff are assigned to areas they are skilled in. These include horseback riding, horse care, sports, drama, arts and crafts and nature. In the afternoon and evening, riding staff work at the barn leading trail rides or other horse-related activities. Non-riding staff organize and lead other activities in the main camp.

Health Director

Our Health Director is responsible for dispensing medications, treatment and supervision of sick campers and will accompany a child to a near-by clinic or hospital, if necessary. The Health Director will review the medical and camper information forms for each child to make sure they are properly completed and will contact parents of campers who have not sent in their medical forms. The Health Director will maintain accurate records of all treatment and medications issued to campers.

Riding Instructor

The Riding Instructor will deal mainly with the riding aspect of camp activities. Campers are grouped according to riding style and ability levels. Riding Instructors are assigned both mounted and unmounted campers during the morning. They also help campers with the care and feeding of our 60+ horses. Riding Instructors are certified through the Horsemanship Safety Association’s National Certification Program, which is held here at Hoofbeat Ridge Camp.

Food Service

Three delicious, nutritional meals are prepared and served to campers daily. Kitchen staff prepare food and bakery items from pre-planned menus. They are also responsible for the clean-up and maintenance of the kitchen facility.

Pre-Camp Training

All staff participates in a week-long pre-camp training program.
